Kigali, Rwanda — Educators, researchers, and students from Africa and Europe gathered at the Protestant University of Rwanda (PUR) for the 9th IMPEQ Conference, exploring how educational quality can act as a transformative force in society. The international event brought together stakeholders from primary and secondary schools, universities, and government sectors, sparking dialogue on the future of learning.
Themed “Educational Quality: As a Transformative Process,” the conference was held in collaboration with the University of Bamberg in Germany. It emphasized that meaningful education extends beyond classroom instruction, equipping students with skills to contribute to national and societal development.
Rev. Dr. Viateur Habarurema, Vice-Rector in charge of Academic Affairs and Research at PUR, highlighted the conference’s purpose: to generate actionable ideas that can drive systemic change and promote comprehensive development in Rwanda and other participating countries.
Research presented revealed that teachers often follow prescribed methods without fully considering student outcomes. Uwituje Celine, Director of Christians School and Master’s graduate in Effective Class Management in Bamberg university of Germany, noted that educators frequently focus on classroom discipline rather than fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. She emphasized that ongoing teacher training, mentorship, and administrative support are crucial for improving educational quality.
Another study highlighted the importance of collaboration between teachers and students. When students merely replicate answers without understanding concepts, the quality of learning suffers. Researchers stressed the need for policies that encourage intellectual engagement and critical thinking in both universities and students’ daily lives. Nezerwa Nahayo Rene, a PUR student, called for clear frameworks to ensure education genuinely develops students’ abilities rather than promoting rote learning.
In his closing remarks, Rev. Dr. Habarurema urged teachers to embrace dedication, confidence, and passion for their work. He emphasized that committed educators are essential for delivering high-quality education in secondary schools and universities, ultimately shaping a society prepared for sustainable growth.
The 9th IMPEQ Conference not only highlighted current challenges in education but also charted a path forward, positioning Rwanda as a hub for innovative and transformative educational practices.
